Pain in legs or arms Arterial blockages not only affect the heart, but also reduce blood flow to the extremities, causing pain, cramps, and weakness in the legs and arms. Called peripheral arterial disease (PAD), this condition usually affects the legs and can cause discomfort when walking, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods of time. The pain usually disappears after rest, but returns when activity is resumed.
What to consider: Pain in the legs during physical activity, especially in the calves. Numbness, tingling, weakness in legs and feet. One or both feet are colder than other parts of the body.
Erectile Dysfunction (ED) For men, erectile dysfunction is the first symptom of blocked arteries. ED occurs when blood flow to the penis is reduced, making it difficult to achieve or maintain an erection. Because atherosclerosis affects arteries throughout the body, clogged arteries can reduce blood flow to the reproductive organs before other serious cardiovascular symptoms occur.
