8 Early Warning Signs of Lupus You Should Know

  1. Joint pain and swelling
Lupus often presents with joint pain, stiffness, and swelling, especially in the hands, wrists, knees, and feet. These symptoms can come and go, making it difficult to pinpoint a specific cause. Unlike arthritis, which typically causes severe joint damage, lupus-related joint pain tends to be less devastating but can still significantly affect mobility and quality of life.

What to watch for:
Morning stiffness that lasts for more than an hour.
Pain in several joints, which lasts for several weeks.
Redness and warmth around the joints, indicating inflammation.

  1. Butterfly-shaped rash
A symptom of lupus is a characteristic “butterfly-shaped” rash across the cheeks and bridge of the nose. Known as a malar rash, this rash is often triggered by sunburn and can range from mild redness to more severe rash. While not all lupus patients develop this rash, its appearance can be one of the first visible signs of the disease.

What to watch for:
Red, raised rash across both cheeks and nose.
Rashes worsen after sun or UV exposure.
The rash may itch or cause discomfort.

  1. Skin sensitivity to sunlight (Photosensitivity)
Many people with lupus are sensitive to sunlight, a condition called photosensitivity. Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can cause skin reactions, such as rashes, and worsen other lupus symptoms such as fatigue and joint pain. Some lupus patients may even develop new rashes in areas that are not directly exposed to the sun.

What to watch for:
Skin rashes or lesions that develop after sun exposure.
Unusual burning or irritation of the skin from minor sun exposure.
Flu-like symptoms after sun exposure, such as fever and fatigue.
